Turf Laying Guide

Step-by-Step Guide to Laying Turf

A beautiful, healthy lawn requires careful preparation and precise installation.
1. Prepare the Ground
  • Clear the Area: Remove all existing grass, weeds, stones, and debris.
  • Dig and Improve: Dig or rotovate the soil to a depth of at least 15cm. Incorporate quality topsoil or soil improver if needed to enhance structure and fertility.
  • Level the Surface: Rake the soil several times in different directions to create a smooth, even surface, filling in any low spots.
  • Firm the Soil: Gently compact the soil using your heels or a roller. The surface should be firm enough that your feet don't sink more than half an inch.
2. Lay the Turf
  • Start Straight: Begin laying the first row of turf along a straight edge, such as a patio, path, or border.
  • Stagger Joints: Lay subsequent rolls in a brickwork pattern, staggering the joints to ensure a seamless finish and prevent the turf from drying out at the edges.
  • Work from Boards: Stand on planks of wood laid on the newly positioned turf to avoid making footprints or compacting the soil as you work your way across the area.
  • Ensure Contact: Push the pieces of turf tightly together so there are no gaps. Use a lightweight roller or tamper after laying to eliminate air pockets and ensure good soil-to-turf contact.
  • Trim Edges: A sharp knife can be used to trim any excess turf around curved edges, borders, or obstacles.
3. Water Immediately
  • Water Thoroughly: As soon as the turf is laid, water it heavily. The first few days are critical for root development.
  • Keep Moist: Continue to water regularly, ensuring the soil beneath the turf remains consistently moist until the roots are fully established (usually a few weeks).
  • Minimise Traffic: Avoid walking on the new lawn as much as possible during the initial establishment period to allow the roots to bed in without disturbance.
